Strange noise? Stuck caliper?

Hey folks, got a 2020 Lariat 2.5 RC level, 12000 miles. No damper, not ever.

I can hear a faint sound only when the truck is moving, it's kinda scrapey, or almost like the rear window is open just a crack. Or how sometimes back in the day you could hear electrical interference from having the wrong spark plugs through the radio. It is next to impossible to tell which direction it is coming from, doesn't matter forward or reverse. The outside of the rotors are all smooth, can't tell how the insides look without getting this old hurting body on the cold cold ground. No issues stopping or pulling to one side when braking.

Has anyone had issues with brake calipers sticking? I hope this isn't a bad axle situation I recall one of the members here having a while ago? Appreciate any input thanks!

I read a post of Phil's the other day on that topic the other day in fact, just waiting on some better weather so maybe I can put the summer rims back on while looking at the shields. I can't recall which thread it was in though.

if you have a brake caliper hanging you can tell easily by the heat. drive for a while, then feel each of the hubs. if one is hanging, one hub / wheel will be hotter than the other 3.

could be your pads. not necessarily a stuck caliper, but just light rubbing maybe.

try Phils method of bedding the brakes and also look at your rotor dust shields, one may be in contact with the rotor a slight bit.

Plus I'll add to check the heat at all 4 corners after the rebed. It may help you pinpoint an unresolved problem or elimi ate the brakes all together for you.

Okay so I put my summer tires on and inspected all 4 rotors and general area for any indication of a problem and everything looked normal. All wheels could turn by hand, and while I could hear a slight scrape at the rear wheels it was not consistent through 360 degrees of rotation, and very slight. Sounded the same as we used to set the parking brake on GM W-body in the plant. I went for a long drive and checked the rotors when I stopped and there was no particularly hot corner.

Does anyone happen to know where the thread that Phil posted his braked bed-in procedure?

Hi Kevin,

I too noticed the lack of linearity of the brakes. The pedal pressure does not match the braking force. I improved mine greatly by bedding in the pads. Try this... from 30 mph, brake aggressively to a stop, and repeat 3 times. Now coast to a stop without touching the brakes. Let them cool for 30 minutes. See if this makes any difference. It did for me. you might repeat the process one more time. hopefully this will help.

Did the re-bed, noise is still there. Doesn't change when brakes are applied, or coasting with the engine off. Nothing seems to be wrapped around the driveshaft. I'm thinking it's going to the dealership to see what's what. Ugh.

Took it to the dealership this afternoon and should find out in the morning what's up.

First time I've ever been back there for any kind of service, so I asked the service adviser sell me a set of cabin and engine air filters to go, to kinda build a tenuous relationship and hopefully they might look the other way when it comes to any unrelated mods on the truck. He said the RC 2.5" level kit shouldn't have any effects on the rear end or driveline but stuck to the script and wouldn't divulge if any other Rangers have been in for a similar complaint. Lets see how it goes.

On a side note, in my head on the short walk home I thought about all the times over the years of building Chev, Pontiac, Buicks, and Cadillacs I razzed any Ford owner who suffered any kind of breakdown, and now here I am doing the Walk of Shame. I guess I had it coming LOL ?

What a coincidence. I took mine in to the dealer just Wednesday for this same issue and they found the “right rear caliper is not functioning properly and is causing the pads to wear pre maturely.” My truck only has 8800 miles on it.​

Just talked to the service advisor, he said it's a driveshaft, the center bearing seal went bad??? They asked about the Krown rustproofing I had done but couldn't say for sure that caused it, so its covered. Should be ready to pick up tomorrow. Whew!

The truck is home safe and sound. It was in fact the center carrier bearing that went out necessitating a whole new driveshaft. Seems like a lot of waste for a bad bearing but hey, gotta keep that supply chain humming. Thanks to Fraser Ford for getting the job done quickly and painlessly.
