So, one of the guys on my Fusion Sport forum just brought this to my attention that the mpg calculator can be adjusted. Take your manual calculated mpg and divide by the computer calculation. Example 21 mpg manual cal divided by computer cal 22.3 = 0.9417. You can round up to 0.942. Multiply by 1000 gives you 942. Plug that number into step #7.

#1 Hold the left steering wheel center ok button down.
#2 turn accessory power on (do not start).
#3 you'll see ET appear (top of left screen, don't have standard gauges so I don't know how or where that will appear).
#4 hit ok.
#5 Engineering screen will appear.
#6 hit arrow up to the AFE screen and follow screen to adjust.
#7 once set to desired numbers turn off ignition.
It may take 1 or 2 tanks to fully adjust to the change. That should get you closer to real mileage.

My Fusion at 26,000 miles was consistently around 1.3 mpg high on the computer. I'll monitor both once I drive and fill and compare manual to computer from now on.

Thanks, I've only got 1,238 miles. I think it's still learning and I haven't really been gentle w/ it. I'll try this down the road that's for sure after gathering more data.

My last fuel up hand calc @ 20.3, Computer @ 21.5. 20.3 / 21.5 =.9441 * 1000 = 944

Refilled and compared mileage. Computer 22.2, manual 22. Much closer.

Months later and many tanks later, I still do the manual calculation to compare and I'm within +/- 0.00-0.03 MPG.

I think one of the issues that also comes in play, is the temperature at which people fill up their tanks. From what I understand is the output volume depending on temperature, and you could be getting slightly more or less than what the pump indicates you're getting. It's probably not a big difference, but it could screw up people's calculations.

The difference is so negligible it shouldn't even bear mentioning. Remember these tanks are underground. Overnight to daytime won't make a change. It's days to weeks of average temperature that would be a bigger factor in temperature. It would also have to be a pretty large change in temp to affect it to the point you'd be able to measure.

I think this information is well presented and very useful, however have you tested at multiple gas stations? You are calibrating the ranger to a specific fuel pump volume reading. These things are tested depending on where you live but there are plenty of reports of inaccuracy. I suggest owners do a few fillups at various stations across town if you are that concerned about accuracy.

I took a trip to Phoenix and back. Didn't change. I had differences of as much as 4 mpg high before I made the adjustments.

This is very interesting - I just set the AFE and I averaged my last two fill ups - one was .953 and one was .935 which I averaged together and got .944 - same as you. I will see how this matches my next few fill ups and report back.

I saw Ray had mentioned he had to make 2 adjustments, the first large adjustment and then a fine tweak to get it closer to actual mpg reading.

With over 5k miles now, I've made 3 adjustments. I'm currently +/- 0.5 mpg between hand calc and computer.

Does this method work to adjust when going up to a larger tire size?

Since it really has nothing to do with tire size, it should work fine. It won't adjust the speedo or anything like that, it just tweaks how the fuel consumption calculations are done by the computer.
