That is why they put covers on engines so whimps wont get scared. Radiators and AC condensers have been exposed to the air forever. That is how they work. You car people just never noticed because of all of the shiny things. Tip: Dont follow so close, you aint that important and dont need to be there a minute earlier.

when i finally found the transmission fluid stick i had a wtf ford moment. felt the same with the alternator placement. im sure they had some reason that guided those placements but as the customer its really annoying to not be able to check my own transmission fluid or splash in a puddle without wondering if the alternator is gonna give out.

I thought engine covers were because mice value their privacy.

I had a rock take out a Honda Odyssey radiator with a smaller gap than the Ranger has in its grill. Higher off the ground as well. Guess that was just terrible luck that it came flying thru the opening and hit it juuuuusst right to spring a leak. A tiny one at that... no telling how long it was like that before I noticed it was trying to warm up and I was low on coolant.

So, it can happen. Am I blocking off that gap on mine? No, surely that wouldn't happen twice eh?... ::knock on wood:: .... paranoia sets in... goes for the duct tape. Not even air will get thru now! This plan is genius.

I have the sensor in that hole and the brackets for the light bar.

I agree there is some odd design cues in the front of the Rander - solid fake honeycomb, slots in metal bumpers and a gaping space under the bumper.
