Just the housing? What's making all the noise inside?
From what the write up said it was "coming from the front pinion area." The housing is supposedly damaged as well. I was told the diff comes as a complete unit.
Not sure the if the pinion is out whack and it is possibly grinding on the ring gear or housing/bearings.

So, my technician buddy and I crawled under at break. Dark gear oil leaking. All over the undercarriage. It is burnt and nasty. ?

They need to come up with you a loaner at this point, even if it's a clapped out Festiva. Sorry you're having so much trouble, what a headache. :confused:

Situations like this are why I always have 2 vehicles. One is none.

Update 1/6- the Fordening

Service manager called me this AM after I didn't catch him in person last night when I visited the dealership again again.
He is escalating the case to Ford and putting out a request to source the part from any dealer who might happen to have one in stock. He is going to call me back (allegedly) this afternoon.
Kind of getting desperate for something as the noise is louder by the day and the seal is leaking as bad or worse than the original incident.

Update 1/7- Raiders of the Lost Diff

Dealership is not returning my calls. ? I talked with another dealer who confirmed that the national depot has a good amount of diffs in stock and they are NOT on backorder.
I did get a short text conversation going with the dealer who dodged my questions. I will post the convo once I get the names fuzzed out.

Update 1/10- The Parts Department of Secrets

No contact from the dealer regarding my repair. However I called the other dealer on the other side of town. I talked with their part's department and confirmed with them that the diff is indeed backordered for my truck. They were not able to get a timeline either. They did show three available in dealer inventories across the country but, said odds are those are on reserve for other repairs.

So I guess I am going to have contact Ford customer service and complain. I've been without a properly functioning truck since 12/27. It really sucks having to keep borrowing vehicles from family.

Update 1/12- Diff Bound and Down

I messaged the dealership this morning via their text line casually asking if they had any updates. They sent back that they expect the diff to be in this week and if I want to schedule to come in on Monday.
So I am waiting for them to let me know what time to bring it in. I will believe it when I see it though. Going to have them change the oil as well against my better judgement but, I do have 42,000 points to spend.

Your problem sounds similar to what I experienced with my last Jeep. Had two factory ball joints fail and this was the VM I got from the service department after the “inspection” on the ball joints

I wish I had that good of communication with the service department at my dealer.

If you just pull your half shafts (also mentioned way back in post 11) you can be back on the road normally without causing any further damage. What's stopping you from doing this?

Instructions in section 205-04.

I also do not have the time or facility to do the job myself.

Also also, I didn't want to disable the 4wd in case I had to make an emergency trip up to the mountains where my parents live. That is the reason I have the 4wd.

This is not consistent with what you have indicated multiple times throughout this thread.

The truck is a boat anchor anyway, right?

I'm not disputing Ford's or the dealer's responsibility to fix the problem in the end, but complaining about it here isn't going to speed up the process. I see two options here: you keep borrowing your family's cars, or you fix the problem on your own.

I referring to actually getting a call from them. I can't get squeeze that out of my dealer. Should have added a "/s" for the sarcasm.

But, yeah. Failing ball joints. What is the worst that could happen? ?
