I have the XL with the tow package. I’m wondering what everyone else has done for the brake controller? Is it something that I can easily install myself? What is the best option for the money? Let me know some of y’all’s experiences.

Not trying to be an A-hole, but his topic has been posted on many times, aka--beat to death. Try the search function and try "tbc" or spell it out. There are also 5 threads under this post.
Cheers :)

Get the Ford OEM one, made by Redarc. The installs sucks. Read all the threads in the towing section on this topic. There are many.

Sometimes the search bar doesn't work all that great and you're better off searching through Google. It will redirect you back to R5G but it's usually easier to search/find what you're looking for. In the meantime here's a couple threads to read. Also if you look at the bottom of this page you'll find other threads related to this topic.

Trust me I tried using the search bar knowing I would get at least one response like this lol. I didn't find what I was looking for...

For the connection to CHMSL, check out my thread so you don't have to rip the headliner out.

https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/chmsl-3rd-brake-light-strobe-module.13282/
https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/redarc-tow-pro-elite-install.1924/

It's stickied in the Towing forum.

Use the search engine of your choice and limit results to ranger5g.com. Works much better than the search function here.

Edit: Great minds think alike Dave!

so i was watching a bunch of install videos and a lot of them did not run a wire back to the third break light? What is the purpose of that? Is it required?

The wires under the panel where the TBC connects gets it's signal from the brake pedal switch. Without that wire to the 3rd brake light, the trailer brakes wont activate under Pre-collision or Adaptive Cruise Control Automatic Emergency Braking.

Enter the trailer brake controller – your secret ally in the world of towing finesse! You've got two champs to choose from: the smooth operator – proportional brake controller – offering a graceful and powerful stop. Then there's the time-delayed controller, granting you the reins to control brake gain flow.

That is another can of worms that causes arguments at times.

@Jason B stated the reason for connecting the wire to the third brake light. It is an added safety for when the emergency braking kicks in when using the pre-collision and/or adaptive cruise control.

Some will argue that this is not necessary and others will counter argue that you should connect the control to the third brake light so as to not defeat any safety features of the vehicle.

I personally want all the safety features to work as they should.

As far as purchasing the Ford approved TBC, Levittown Ford is usually the cheapest. I bought mine directly from Ford since I had a bunch of Ford Pass Points saved up and had to use them before losing them.

When ordering through Ford, you can also pay for and setup installation at your local Ford dealership. This helps so that dealerships can't jack you around with the labor charges.

My local dealership took about 4 1/2 hours to install the Ford TBC.

This has about covered it. I have the Redarc in my Ranger due to AEB, but I think my Prodigy P3 works better in my other vehicles. It just won’t work with the AEB, so, the Ranger has the Redarc.
