In all honesty ask any trainer and they will tell you if you do feed your dogs people food the training is not very effective. With ours there is no begging while we’re eating or pen time. Never give them scraps after dinner, they think that’s the reward for not begging! So pretty much training treats and daily food rations. And spend quality time with them, or just like kids they start acting up.
We feed our mutts table snacks and we train them. What are we doing wrong? If they are at the table begging and it annoying us. We simply tell them to "go back" then "sit". But to be honest, we rarely need to do this while at the table. We train them to do many, many things which creates order in a dogs world. These dogs were told to be on the logs for the photos.

Any body have suggestions for keeping dogs off of the countertops?

We've had a lot of big dogs, but this is the first time we've had this issue.

This guy...

Patrick is about 10 months old and has started to peruse the countertops for snacks.

We're trying to be diligent about food and wrappers left up there but any tips for discouraging this behavior would be welcome.

Currently we simply correct him when he's caught in the act.

While I'm all for a quick, light tap on the nose to get their attention the wife is against ANY physical correction.

We'll have to stick with the citronella spray training collar.

Dogs understand perfectly well what a growl is and they understand tones as well. No shock or citronella collars necessary.
For sure. They also understand consitency. Being as how we have me, the wife, and two kids the most consistent, repeatable for all method we've found for THIS stubborn pup is the collar.

Luckily, although stubborn, he is smart, he only progressed to the spray a few times.

A beep always gets his attention now.
Shock collars should be outlawed IMHO.
Agreed.

Mutts at church and with the neighborhood kids. More can be seen on the dogs blog. No shock or citronella collars need, just training and socialization. The little one Naomi, spends most of the day in our yard looking for the dogs.

Normally the two prefer their own space, but this particular morning I woke up to this.

I love it when you happen upon your dogs' tender moments. Here is a rare, quiet shot of Kami snuggling next to Roush. Being the younger dog, it has been really neat to see how attached she has become to him.

Dogs out and about and on the road to Ely MN and back. Yes socializing. The only people we knew in advance are in the top photo. If you get your mutts out, please post photos of that.
