Windshield Repair Question

Hi all, had a rock crack my windshield, it is what it js, but I am slightly concerned about the quality of the repair.

I called my local Ford Dealer and they quoted me $1200, I am inclined to pay that to ensure I get a quality job, using the OEM FoMoCo glass and ensure that my lane keeping assist is properly calibrated, etc.

Safelite is exactly the same price so it is not like they are appreciably cheaper, I am more concerned that they won't do a good job and they said even after they calibrate the Lane Keeping Assit there is a chance I will still have to go to FORD anyway.

I would be willing to look elsewhere at a local shop, but I wouldn't even know where to start looking for a quality shop.

I agree. Go to Ford. Especially if you are not saving a ton. I had a Volt with all of the sensors and cameras and rocket launchers at the top of the windshield. Had a private shop replace the windshield ($500 installed for a Chinese knock off) and it was never the quite the same.
Sidenote: I am considering dropping my comprehensive deductible from $500 to $100. I am hard on windshields.

I have full windshield coverage and am giving Safelite a try today. Ford dealer outsources the work anyway and is probably no better or worse than going through Safelite. I asked for the windshield with Ranger on it which I assume is OEM. I am going to double-check on that. My OEM windshield got a rock chip and two chips that resulted in cracks in less than a year of ownership and well under 10k of driving. I think these trucks are a rock chip magnet.

Ask your Ford Dealer if they farm the work out and who they use. You can go directly to them and save a bit. I had a windshield replaced on my Porsche and called the Porsche Dealer who told me who they used for this kind of repair. Mobile install right in my garage, and no issues! Even got OEM German Glass for LESS than Safelite and other installers charged for their knockoffs!

I went to safelite for my 2019 Ranger and asked for an OEM replacement. I've had no problems with the installation and the re-calibration went smoothly.

Safelite came out and replaced my windshield yesterday with a Ford OEM part. Took the tech about 2 hours and that included the dynamic camera calibration. When he was replacing the mirror the tab it mounts to popped off the glass so they had to glue it back on. They said after the sealant cures in about 2 weeks I can reschedule to have a new windshield put in since that one was defective...even though they fixed it. I may not worry about it. My insurance has zero deductable glass replacement but if not, it would have cost me just under $900 for everything.

Now if your current insurance doesnt offer it then look into another company to see if they offer it and im sure they can make your day.

Now for the glass. Like everyone else I would suggest you go with Ford since you also have a few sensors to reset. Also if i remember correctly I dont believe any aftermarket glass company has glass avalible for the Ranger yet either. That might have changed but it doesnt mean anything. Also if the crack is small enough you might be lucky enough to just get a chip repair but it all depends on the size of the crack.

Safelite originally was going to give me an aftermarket glass that said Ranger. I had to specifically ask for Ford. With that said, they did not hesitate to so that for me.

If the aftermarket glass was going to say ranger on it then it is still the original glass Ford. If I remember correctly the company Ford uses is Carlite. In general they are nice especially with the abuse mine got to see over the last (short and weak) Colorado winter. This basically tells me that no aftermarket glass company(other brands put simply) has glass avalible for the trucks yet but give it some time and we will see.this change. If anything though just be aware that calibration of the front camera has to be done after the glass replacement and your Safelite dealer might not have the equipment to do this calibration. Just food for thought.

Oi they threw new gravel on this paved road and the stupid FedEx truck was screaming pass me and send a rock to my rangers windshield. Not a happy guy right now ?

I got a rock chip in my windshield repaired today. Local repair shop guy came out to our home, we've used him before, great guy.

While he was fixing the chip we were talking and he has invested about 20 grand in the equipment to reprogram various makes and model vehicles after he does a windshield replacement. It seems that new Subaru's are a nightmare, and our Rangers are not to bad. Basically about a 30 minute ordeal after the windshield is installed where he has to drive the truck to re-calibrate the parameters.

I thought that was good news, I can avoid the hassle of driving to the dealership and waiting, and the guy doing the work I know, and am confident he'll do a good job.

The rock chip repair cost $40.

I can say this with certainty. With this generation of Ranger it has not been on the road long enough for aftermarket glass makers to cobble up a knockoff. All glass being replaced is Ford glass. The plant that makes them is just outside of Nashville TN.
