Accidentally bumped red line

Maybe that's something that Ford needs to address. It's definitely very easy to inadvertently press the "+/-" switch when shifting into S mode. I know that when I fist got the truck I did exactly the same thing thinking it wasn't actually in Select Shift mode. It definitely startled me as well.

Lol I did the same thing too. I was getting on the on ramp from a red light and dropped it into S and I must of hit the side button. It took off like a rocket but never shifted and just about hit the red line before I shifted it. I'm like wtf this darn pos never shifted blah blah then I realized I was the dumb ass who hit the side button.

I like how Toyota does it where you have to actually move the selector over from drive to then manually select gears. It's not just an easy press button than can be bumped without notice right where you're grabbing the selector anyway.

What's to address? You went to a mode with manual shifting and then shifted. If was an actual manual it wouldn't shift either.

But it's not. It's sport mode AND select shift mode if you accidentally bump the switch. I agree that it's an easy thing to get used to (avoid the switch) but it definitely seems like it's and issue that has clearly presented itself. Like I said a couple posts up, it would be nice if it was more obvious that you entered into select shift, not just that you're in Sport mode and now you have to pay attention as well. They should be separate and deliberate IMO.

These motors are upgraded RS motors and will take quite a beating..

Absolute truth. More durable RS rally car motors indeed. Run good SN+ full synthetic oil & good flters ur golden. I like to use 93 octane cause these motors REALLY LIKE IT.

Atiila, i did the same thing, tested out Sport Mode with about 25 miles on the odometer. It felt like a piston seized to me, the way it shuddered and slowed back down. Now I am seven months in, and about 9,500 miles, runs smoother than ever and shows no ill effects. Just do your best to forget it happened, thats what I’m doing.

So I was in sport mode this weekend. Light turned green I floored it and I noticed that the truck was not shifting until it hit redline - so I think you are pretty safe.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I just wanted to let everyone know to be careful with sport mode and the shift buttons. A friend of mine was driving a rental ranger and blew the engine thinking that sport mode was like the other "manual" modes that came in the 50 other rental cars that we've driven. After playing around with sport mode on the freeway for a little while and seeing that it would shift gears automatically he decided to downshift using the button on the shifter. He came to a stop at the bottom of an exit ramp and then realized he needed to get back on the freeway. He floored it to get across two lanes of traffic and it didn't shift. It bumped the redline for maybe 2 seconds and then ecoboom. You would have thought that it would have cut fuel to prevent damage but then again he said that it had about 13,000 miles on it, so who knows how much abuse it had seen prior to him renting it.

Does anyone know exactly what's going on when you're in sport mode and you decide to hit one of the shift buttons? How long does that last in case you accidentally hit it and didn't realize it before getting on the has again?

If you hit those buttons in sport mode, it changes to essentially a manual shift - if you don't use the buttons to shift, it won't shift. You can either shift out of sport or I think a long press on one of the buttons will get out out of it (I think). Someone else can correct me on how to get out - I only did it once and I don't remember how I got out of it.

I just read the ford literature. Very interesting. It reads like it will "maybe" shift it if thinks it needs to.

The way I read it is: sport mode acts like sport mode, bump either the + or - and the truck enters manual mode and it will no longer shift. Then return to drive to leave manual mode (selectshift).

Others here can confirm as well (it has been reported a number of times) - if you put it into "Select Shift", it absolutely WON'T shift unless you shift it with the buttons.

This is what I read. "To prevent over-revving, it is possible that the transmission may automatically upshift as well."

I like the ranger, and even considered getting one, but with my friends little rental experience I'd be hesitant to buy one. Yes he had no history of the previous 13k miles, but bouncing off the rev limiter in first gear for all of 2 seconds and then having a rod shoot through the block just doesn't sound very durable. The raptor sounds more enticing to me if it did go with the 2.7 ecoboost. I'm just cautious of the 2.3 unless someone can prove otherwise.
